May 2022 Boxing Schedule
The boxing world is always buzzing with activity and there are always big matches on the horizon. Here is a look at some of the biggest boxing matches scheduled for May 2022, as well as some predictions for how they will turn out.
May 6: Gennady Golovkin vs. Saul Alvarez
This highly anticipated rematch has been years in the making. The first fight, which took place in September 2017, was a close and controversial affair that saw Golovkin retaining his Middleweight title via unanimous decision.
Alvarez has been on a tear since then, winning 11 straight fights, including a dominant victory over Golovkin’s arch-rival Daniel Jacobs. Golovkin, on the other hand, has suffered back-to-back losses to Alvarez and Jacobs.
At this point in their careers, it is difficult to pick a winner. Alvarez is the more active fighter and appears to be in his prime at age 28. Golovkin is 38 years old and many are wondering if his best days are behind him.
Given all of this, I am predicting that Alvarez will win this fight by decision. He will be too quick and too sharp for Golovkin, who will put up a valiant effort but ultimately come up short.
May 13: Errol Spence Jr. vs Terence Crawford
This is a match-up between two of the very best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today. Spence is the current IBF and WBC Welterweight champion while Crawford is the WBO Welterweight champion.
Spence is undefeated in 27 professional fights with 21 wins coming by way of knockout. He is a big, strong fighter who uses his reach advantage well. Crawford, on the other hand, has 34 wins with 25 of them coming by way of knockout. He is also undefeated as a professional and many consider him to be pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world today.
This is a tough one to call but I am going to go with Spence by decision. I think his size and reach advantage will be too much for Crawford to overcome and he will take home a close but clear victory on May 13th.
Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin: May 5th, 2022
The highly anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is finally happening. After their first bout ended in a controversial draw, both fighters will be looking for a definitive victory when they face off on May 5th, 2022. This will be one of the biggest boxing events of the year, so be sure to mark it on your calendar.
Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr.: May 12th, 2022
On May 12th, 2022, undefeated WBC and WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (36-0, 27 KOs) will take on IBF titleholder Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (27-0, 21 KOs) in a much-anticipated unification bout. The fight will take place at a venue to be determined and will be broadcast live on pay-per-view.
Crawford, 32, is widely considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today. A three-division world champion, he has wins over some of the biggest names in the sport, including Amir Khan, Jeff Horn, Julius Indongo, and Viktor Postol. In his most recent outing, he successfully defended his belts against mandatory challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas with a ninth-round TKO.
Spence Jr., 29, is the current IBF welterweight champion and one of the most feared fighters in boxing. An elite athlete with knockout power in both hands, he has racked up wins over the likes of Kell Brook, Mikey Garcia, and Lamont Peterson. He has defended his title four times since winning it in 2017.
This will be one of the biggest fights of the year and one that boxing fans have been clamoring for. Don’t miss it!
Danny Garcia vs. Keith Thurman: May 19th, 2022
Former welterweight world titleholders Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman will meet in a highly anticipated rematch on May 19th, 2022.
The first fight between the two took place in March of 2017, with Thurman winning a close and highly controversial decision. Many felt that Garcia deserved the win, and both fighters have been calling for a rematch ever since.
The May 19th bout will take place at a yet-to-be-determined venue.
Manny Pacquiao vs. Mikey Garcia: May 26th, 2022
Manny Pacquiao, one of the greatest boxers of all time, is scheduled to fight Mikey Garcia on May 26th, 2022. This will be a highly anticipated match, as both men are skilled boxers with a lot to prove.
