The minimum weight for the cruiserweight division was raised to 200 pounds in 1972. In 1983, the division’s name was changed to cruiserweight.

The Light Heavyweight Division

The light heavyweight division in professional boxing typically includes boxers weighing between 175 and 200 pounds, but has also been known to include boxers weighing up to 205 pounds. The divisional limit of 175 pounds was established in 1903 by the London Prize Ring rules, which remained in effect until the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) took over sanctioning of British boxing in 1920.

When the BBBofC introduced their own weight limits in 1927, they set the limit for the light heavyweight division at 174 pounds, which remained in place until February 3, 1973 when it was raised to its current limit of 175 pounds. The IBF followed suit on April 1, 1983. Since then, various governing bodies have occasionally made headlines by creating “super” or “cruiserweight” classes for boxers who weigh more than 200 pounds but less than heavyweight ( unlimited).

The WBA had a cruiserweight class from 1988 to 2003 (at which point they unified their title with the WBC’s), while the WBO sanctioned a super cruiserweight class from 1999 to 2011.

The last lineal light heavyweight champion was Michael Spinks, who defeated Dwight Muhammad Qawi by unanimous decision on June 27, 1987 to become The Ring magazine Light Heavyweight Champion; The Ring had stopped recognizing previous lineal holders since 1975 due to retirement or prolonged inactivity.

Spinks vacated The Ring title when he moved up to heavyweight later that year and defeated Larry Holmes by split decision on September 21, 1985 to become the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion; as such, he is not recognized as a lineal light heavyweight champion by history’s most prominent record-keeper.

Qawi regained a share of The Ring Light Heavyweight Championship after defeating Marvin Johnson on December 3, 1987 but lost it back to Johnson via technical knockout on March 18, 1988; Johnson would make two successful defenses before being knocked out himself by Thomas Hearns on October 2, 1988. In 1995, the WBA elevated Virgil Hill to Super Champion status due having made ten successful defenses while holding their world championship.
